Uh always like to start just please tell our listeners a little bit about who you are, where you're from, you know, the general background. Everybody loves to know.

Yeah, absolutely. Well, first off, thank you guys for having me. That was uh, like I said, that was a good pump up. Um, I am Dr. Sam Wagner. I uh own Rehab Lab, Wisconsin. Um we currently have two practices, one in Milwaukee and one in Appleton. Um I am a chiropractor, uh, but I practice not just chiropractic, more physical therapy type as well. Um yeah, and I'm a big fan of formerly ARPNERO, now nervo TX, or what how how should I say it? Nervotics.

Direct current, yeah. I mean, I love it either way. Um, it's been a huge, huge part of our style of practice and what we use not only with the professional athletes, but just with every athlete I like to say. And it's been a really, really big piece of our our treatment and a lot of the results and success that we've been able to have. So thank you guys for all that you do and for having me on today.

Are you from so I'm actually born in Chicago when I was younger? We moved across to the Wisconsin area. Um, so the majority of my life has been spent in Wisconsin.

Being from Chicago, I know, I know where your heart is. It's got to now be Green Bay. But deep down, let's this is an open moment for you to come clean as a Chicagoan. I'm just kidding. Yeah, I mean, right? Yeah, look at it. I've made I'm I'm not making you cry, but I'm making you blush, that's for sure.

It's all good. The Packers have owned the Bears for so many years. It's like, and as a matter of fact, as a season ticket holder for the Bears, I there must be a lot of fans in in Chicago because every tunnel I I walked, and I've got I'm old, so I've got bad hearing, but every tunnel going in and out of games, all I hear is Green Bay's great. Green Bay's great. And there's a chant that goes on. So I don't, I think that's the chant. I have a hard time hearing it, but I'm just kidding. We finally had uh, you know, we finally got a little bit, but uh so you're you're up in the Green Bay area and Milwaukee area. Tell us a little bit about your practice in in Wisconsin. I know you've done a lot of work with athletes and weekend warriors. Tell us, tell our listeners a little bit about your practice.

Yeah, of course. So um I like to say everyone's an athlete, whether you are playing in the NFL or NBA, or you're my grandmother and you have to squat to get into your car. Those are athletic movements. And our goal is to not only get people out of pain, but to prevent it from coming back so they can perform and do the things they want to do. And we like to say life is an athletic event. And that is our style of practice where we spend a full hour with patients. It's not just like a quick rack them and crack them, or like here's a handout of exercises to go do. Um, we'll do dry needling, cupping, grass, and ART adjustments, corrective exercise, rehab, you know, laser, stem wave, and then ARP or Nervo TX. And those have all been such a great way and tools to utilize for the outcomes that we're seeking. Um, with that style of practice, it's a lot of fun, especially when you can spend a little bit more time one-on-one with someone for an entire hour. There's just so much more we can accomplish and get done. And uh the challenging cases are really fun. Um, I've noticed too, like oddly for some patients, we're kind of like a last hope. You know, they've gone the traditional chiropractic, conditional P T excuse me, the traditional PT route, you know, inject chins, done all these things, and the next option is surgery, and then they'll come see us. And those to me are the most fun cases because using technology like this blows them away because they're feeling tissue or feeling muscles and able to do things and function in ways that they couldn't before. And this has been a huge help with it.

Yeah. Why do why do you think that, Dr. Sam, why do you think that is? Because I'm with you. It's like our clinics across the country, especially, I mean, pro athletes obviously have figured this out. I mean, they that's it's been in the locker rooms, it's been in their training rooms, and the trainers themselves, especially. I know you work with a ton of NFL guys, they they have their own crews, especially at the higher levels because the car crash, car crashes, I should say, they go through. Um you know, but it it is so challenging and difficult. I'd love to get your take on what why is why is it becoming why is the last resort versus the first resort and when is that going to change? Because we're starting to get direct current everywhere. But I want it to be the first thought, not the I've done PRP, I've done this, I've done that, I've I'm close to surgery because I'm so much in pain. And then they get a you know, get introduced to direct current as a last resort. What why do you think that is?

I think there's a little bit of a uh the awareness piece of it, um, where the knowledge base is not there a ton and the access to it initially. Um, but that said, the more familiarity that people are getting, the more that clinicians and clinics are able to use the style of technology in conjunction with their art the treatment that they're already doing, uh it will slowly continue to build that awareness. And I think when they see some high levels and high performers, like, oh, okay, hey, that works with that pro athlete, why can't that work with me? You know, because at the end of the day, everyone's a person, even though physiologically we're all different. But if we can level the playing field or help accelerate the outcome that we're seeking, I think and a lot of times people will do it, you know. No one wants to be in pain. If there's an avenue that you can go down that even you can take a device at home to utilize, why not look into it? Why not seek it out? Um, you know, it's it's been a really neat thing for me, right? Like we talked about working with the professional athletes and and all the different players is super fun. But I think it's even more rewarding, like you said, when there's a woman that comes in and is like, hey, I'm gonna have to get my knee replaced. Well, let's use this technology. And then it turns out she doesn't even end up needing to have the surgery because her body is doing what it needs to do. Um, those those cases, those times are super, super fun and super neat to be part of, strictly because we know that the body can do some amazing things and it's super smart, but if we can help it along the process, um, I think that's what's gonna start to move the needle and get the get the awareness of this type of technology out to the masses.

Yeah. How long have you let's start back with when did you discover direct current and how long ago was that? And and tell us a little bit about that experience.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so um I believe it was in 2024 when I first got my RX100 unit. Um, I had familiarity of it before from other clinicians that were talking about it, but I really didn't know too much. And as I researched more and started to use it more with you know patients and athletes and myself, I really, really came to love it and enjoy it. Um, the thing that I found was really neat about it is just the body's ability to handle different things, right? And um, for example, like that pain threshold, that pain pathway. A lot of people, you know, best example I had, there's a woman who had a frozen shoulder, couldn't lift her arm past here using the technology in one session, she's reaching above her head while we're using this technology. And the thing I love about it, um, and being able to explain it to her was that her body is so accustomed to being limited in this movement, it doesn't want to go further. But when we hooked up the the nerve OTX, her range improves because her body was strong and the correct neuromuscular contractions were happening and things were firing optimally, where in a lot of the cases the tissue just isn't gonna respond right away, or it's gonna be a little bit longer process, and so this just accelerates things at a different level. Um, the uh the the best analogy I had, and I believe this was when I first started picking Jake's brain, and we had conversations about it. Um the brain contracts muscle two to 25 times a second, and this technology does it up to 500. So if you want to talk about supercharging your rehab, uh activating neuromusculature that hasn't been activated for a while, or inhibiting things that are overcompensating, and uh just I'm super nerdy and I love this because that is able to use the nerdiness to just help people even even faster and crush return to plate outcomes and accelerate tissue healing, and uh it's it's just I can't say enough good things about it. Yeah, I don't know if that answered your questions.

I think it's yeah, I I love the analogy that be you know, nerding out on this technology because I've got, although he's having technical difficulties today getting on and on this podcast. So sorry about that. He nerds out like the best of them. So I I love this stuff. I don't, you know, kind of trying to learn it myself, but I've learned so much over the time, especially with compensations and the body and movement and accelerating that recovery and performance, you know, improving improvements on that. And I mean, I am such a believer. I I live in the foot bath at least three, four times a week. I, you know, use it, you know, I'm I'm like, you know, I pretend like I'm an athlete. I'm just trying to move every day, and that's challenging as you get older. So I'm learning to this technology like is the greatest gift for uh of this job for me personally is just having it at my fingertips to allow for me to recover from a pickle issue or a tennis or whatever is going on. But uh yeah, I think this is uh it is amazing technology, and it it's I think the hardest thing for the general public to understand is compensation. My knee hurts, my calf hurts. Reality is it's hurting not you know because of something else that's going on and something that's compensating, or you've been doing compens, you know, that that's affected that. I'd love to get your insight on that. So you kind of I mean, dumb it down if you could with why that occurs, in your opinion.

Yeah, um, so with compensations and things that happen, um the body is smart, it's going to adapt. However, over time, the stress of those adaptations can create further limitations. And you know, if there's a muscle that is working harder than it needs to work and it's doing the job of the other tissues around it, that's when injuries are gonna happen. And the thing with this style of tissue, and I and I love I really like to chat about it in this way, like obviously the body is full of energy. The most optimal way for the things to function is all the energy needs to be working um in conjunction the entire time. When we have issues like that, something can happen called like an energy leak. Basically, that energy is going away, and then we're susceptible to injury, uh, tissues loading improperly, longer term potential for damage. What this technology does is to avoid further compensation, is it's going to find where those energy leaks are coming from, make sure we're not leaking anything anymore, and get everything firing in a more proper way.

That that is that's an incredible explanation because it is it. I mean, Jake, I think, you know, what are your thoughts?

What let me just fill you in before you jump into that. I mean, what we heard, and and now he won't go live with this on his on his on his social media because what I heard was that he's from Chicago. Deep down, he can't say it publicly, but he's a bear fan. I'm just kidding, you know, no, it's all good. That's all you missed, right, Dr. Sam? He'll never admit that. No way. No, that's it. That's it. That's funny. Go ahead, Jake.

No, I it's and this is why this is why we we like it in the hands of people like Dr. Sam. And you're not a dime a dozen, you're hard to find. You're you're a you're a gem within a lot of other just hard rubble to kind of sift through. It's not been easy. And I'm not even speaking from experience, I'm speaking from the experience of those who are going out there and doing the digging. Um, so we we're we're grateful to have people like you to get your hands on that technology. Um, and yeah, I I I 100% agree with you is that you know you're you're using something that's kind of gonna help assist in that, and your brain basically takes over. Um, and you had some really cool things even before this. So where you took that knowledge and where you've learned with other uh technologies, um we're looking forward to seeing where you take direct current because it's the future. I think it's uh I think you're a forward-thinking doctor, and as a result of that, it's just gonna, I think there's gonna, you're gonna reap the rewards over the next several decades, hopefully, where that where I think direct current can go.

Thank you. I appreciate that. And I think it's a it's just been a very big catalyst to allowing myself to and the docs that I've surrounded myself with and the patients to be able to help them in a manner that we have at an even more elevated um capability, right? Like, and it kind of going back to what you're saying, Matt, the the whole artrogenic inhibition, right? Like when the compensations and those things happen, and ultimately, you know, the best example I can go is like, hey, my knee hurts, my knee hurts. You know, and the traditional model says let's go treat the knee, let's go treat the knee. But how about we look at what's happening with the foot and the ankle? Or what why don't we look at what's happening with the hip, right? Doing the scanning protocol, you know, like, oh, my knee hurts, my knee hurts, but wow, there's something actually happening further up the chain based on our scan. That's what is causing this issue. But no one tells you that because the traditional model says, let's just treat the knee, let's just keep treating the knee. And that's what I love about this technology, especially with those really, really hard cases where we can use all the modality passive things. But again, the whole goal of this is to give motor control to load tissue in a proper way. All that soft tissue stuff, all the feel-good things is a neurological window to load tissue in the more functional way. When we can use this technology to scan it more specifically and pinpoint exactly where the issue is, and then use it and load the tissue simultaneously, it's like gangbusters. It's a it's a completely different type of treatment, right? Then we're actually making those improvements. Uh, and that's what I really, really grew to love about this. And uh the the because it made sense to me of all right, well, let's do the scan, let's really pinpoint. Okay, now we pinpoint, and then after a while, we can just continue to just you know stack days, right? Just compound, compound, compound, more positive reinforcement into the body.

Yeah, I love it. So question I have for you, because I know you've got your practice, and then I know you work a lot with professional athletes. How does that work? I mean, these guys have how do you get that new athlete, you know, and I know uh I can say it, Jake, the Packers and you know, Green Bay, because they are such an unbelievable organization, you know, and they seem to have got our at our number for way too many years. But in general, how how does somebody, you know, is it just word of mouth and or are you officially affiliated with the Packers, or how does that all transpire for the weekend warrior that's just loving the NFL? How do they how does that all work?

Yeah, so I I'm not officially affiliated with any team. I just work with people individually that I get in contact with, um, that are referred from, you know, teammates or other people in the league or other professional sports teams. Um, and so really my care is no different for them than it is for a patient that comes into our clinic. Um, it's there really is not any difference. Um, it's very similar, and I that's why I like to say, right, you can get the professional athlete treatment here in our practice because everyone's a professional athlete in our eyes, right? You have to move in different ways. And um so yeah, I don't have any affiliation with anybody. Um, I just want to help people, and I love that's kind of where that comes from.

Yeah, I think I think that's the key. I I I think the we when you look at these professional athletes, I mean, obviously their bread and butter is their bodies and their recoveries and their it, and and I always like to tell people that just when you look at it, there's a reason these guys are all coming back so quickly, you know what I mean, from ACLs and from injuries and from this and that, because they're gonna go after whatever the best technology is available to them. And you know, that's why I think direct current's been so strong in that world. But I think your analogy when we first, you know, came on was everybody's an athlete. I love that because that's the truth. Whether it's an Uncle Bill getting into in and out of a car, or yeah, you know, it's somebody that's gonna go into a car crash every Sunday. I mean, that's it it's the same mindset because it's the same passion, it's the same desire. You want to be as optimal as possible, whether it's getting in or out of the car or playing on a Sunday. So I I think that analogy is is absolutely perfect for you know, this your what you're doing, and more importantly, thinking outside the box on how you integrated direct current and how you brought it to your practice. So thank you.

Yeah, I mean, I think there obviously with anything, it's called practice for a reason, right? There's a lot of trial and error, there's a lot of things you see. Does this work? Does that work? And the neat thing is no one physiologically. Is the same. So everyone is going to respond to things differently. And I think if your care is individualized, that's when you start to see even more of the results, right? Um, it's not like, hey, this works for this athlete, this is definitely gonna work for this athlete. It doesn't work like that, but there's nuances and similarities that you can lean on, and then your clinical expertise and and the ability to use equipment like this that can really be a benefit.

I love it. Now you mentioned you have the RX 100. Have you had a chance to use the the DX500 or any of the over-the-counter devices?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so man, I think we have four of the PRS units. I just got the DX500, uh, and I love them. Um, you know, obviously the ability to still get results that we're seeking with that more portable unit is incredible. And then I know I had talked to Jake recently about one of the NBA players that I was working with and doing a footbath on him with the DX500, and the thing like post-game or just you know, history of plantar fascism, ankle sprain, strain for any any patient using or neuropathy, even. Um, we have a couple clients here in our in our clinics that we use it for that as well. So there's just such a diversity and multitude of things that can benefit from it. Um, and even like you said, the the thing that I really like, and I feel like there's a shift happening in the health paradigm, is let's be proactive rather than reactive, right? Is that you know let's use this multiple times a week. Yeah, I don't have anything going on, but I know this can benefit me long term so that nothing does happen. This is a great tool for that.

Yeah, I agree. I I'm a huge believer in the foot bath. I think like it's such a no-brainer because it's passive, you sit there, it's easy, you're getting results all the way from foot to whether you put them near, you know, the pads on your knees, lower back, or even shoulders. Um, I I think is is such a great preventative method. And then I don't care if you're, you know, a professional athlete or you're on your feet all day working in a restaurant. I mean, I can't, you know, the the amount of pounding and to be able to recover that with blood flow, you know, please share with our in in, you know, even your NBA players post-game and just recovery. Tell our listeners a little bit about your thoughts on that, the value of that foot bath and what that's doing proactively.

Yeah, so um with the body, right? When we are playing a competition or a game, where a lot of time we're spent in like that fight or flight mode. When you know, some of these guys will have the and the NBA is different where they'll have back-to-back games, not a week between. Uh, they've got to be able to recover and perform for potentially a game the next day. So this technology is able to help us down-regulate the system to get us into the more parasympathetic state, that fight or flight, to really get the rest in while also helping neuromuscular uh ability and contraction to recover. And more importantly, it gets better blood flow and circulation, gets a lot of that lymphatic drainage, helps that stuff cycle in and cycle out. And it just works as like a pump to get the body into a more recovered state. Um I uh really have enjoyed using the foot bath technology for that. And like you said, I've done that myself as well. After, you know, if I've had a really um long day uh on my feet, or if I had a really, really big workout myself, did a run, something like that, it's been really, really great to not only feel the effects of it, but also kind of know what we're trying to accomplish. And so with those, those type of athletes, a lot of your even like your marathoners, long distance runners as well, uh using this. Oh uh one one of our patients said he felt like what normally would take him, you know, uh a few days to a week to feel like he's back to 100%. He said after using the foot bath the next day, he felt like he got to where he would normally in a week. Which again, when you want to talk about like accelerating recovery and improving performance, this is a great technology to utilize. You there with us, Jake?

If I could just piggyback off of what you said, Dr. Sam, because we we have seen a lot of benefits to that. And I I have to say, you know, I'm guilty of this because we were using it for for one specific thing over the course of years, and we kind of got caught up in that. And and credit, God, I hate doing this, but credit to Matt, who who started using the foot bath, he started to believe in it, and he pushed it. I've been doing the foot bath for the last month almost every day, uh, for the reasons that you were talking about. And I believe that it has been, it's taken me to another level, fixing my hip. And I think it's done a better job than how I was using it originally when we're talking this technology. I think there's something to be said about what you're talking about, you know, the lymphatic and flushing it out, muscle flushing. I think it's huge uh for this technology, and we are gonna lean in that and and actually we're developing more protocols uh for shoulders. You know, Matt kind of alluded to it, to knees, low back, even as high as the neck with the water. Uh and it's almost passive where you just sit there and you're kind of you know just kind of enjoying the process.

Yeah, I've uh really again, that was not a ty that was not a thing that I really did a lot early on when I first got my units. I I never really did the the foot bath before, but um since I've gotten more familiar familiar with it and being able to dabble in that and use that more, there's just so many benefits from it that I think a lot of clinicians even don't even realize that they have access to or they they can use. And um, one of the things too about this technology that I like when we talk about the DX and the PRS is that you can give these to your athletes or patients and they can sleep with it. And then that recovery aspect even more, right? Instead of you know, use this, we'll use this for an hour, two hours while you're here with us and then go home, like sleeping for eight hours with that direct current working overnight is only going to benefit and accelerate recovery even more.

Yeah, yeah. I totally agree. Uh what one last question that is always the biggest question asked, because people still immediately go to an injury and want to ice, right? And this technology, just with blood flow alone, forget the contractions. I mean, it it's it's a no-brainer. That's from me, but I want to hear from both you, Dr. Sam, and Jake, just how much more beneficial it is to slap on some pads, have the over-the-counter, and get right into either contractions or blood flow or both.

Yeah, I mean, I think that first of all, I don't think ice is the go-to. Uh that's been debunked.

Uh, but try to tell that to the people who love ice.

Yeah, try to tell that to all the weekend warriors out there because it's a yeah, it's still happening at all levels of of sports, and just I think it's just so in embedded in the in the brains of everybody that as soon as something happens, it's immediately let's go get some ice pags and you know, let's get it on ice, right? Versus yeah, forget that strategy. Get one of the over the counters and you know, either start contraction or blood flow or both, you know, and you know, your thoughts on that. Try to try to explain that to me or a weekend warrior, why is that so critical to jump on that?

Yeah, well, I mean, a lot of the medical research shows now that movement is the best thing. Uh, because when we want to stiffen things up, um we can potentially create atrophy and create more inhibition when we really don't want to. We want to keep activation. And yes, in acute phases, right? Hey, let me ice just to get some swelling down, but we want to mobilize that tissue as much as we can. And even if it's like, hey, I can't move it that much, but I can put the technology on there, right? Put the pads on there to create the blood flow and contraction because inflammation is not always bad because we need it for the healing process. And if this we can use it as a benefit with this style technology, it's great. I mean, it reminds me there was a an athlete that we worked with, he's a collegiate baseball player. First game of the season rolled his ankle, you know, they said grade, pretty high grade sprain. I can't remember if it was a two or three. Um, but they're like, you know, it's looking like um you're going to be out probably the majority of the season, if not the whole season. I think he had played four games and he was super bummed because they had a great team, really big year for him. And working with him, we first started to use this technology. Put the put the ARP on him at the time, or nerve OTX on him at the time, and then just did some of the passive movements. Like, let's just restore range of motion, right? Then we gave him the PRS to take home. Like, hey, you just need to do this motion. And what was really neat is his swelling went down, and then he was able to return to activity sooner. And his uh PT had reached out to us and asked us, you know, what we were doing, what were we using on him, um, because he ended up being able to play some games toward the end of the year when originally it was looking like he wasn't gonna be able to play at all. So the biggest thing with that is the early adaptation and using this early with that uh specific patient.

Yeah, I I I love hearing those stories because we Jake and I hear them all the time. It's just trying to get it to the general public to say this stuff is amazing, and it you still get sometimes when you try to explain it, at least I'm not that good like you guys, but like I got three eyes. Like, if this was that great, why wouldn't it be everywhere? You know, uh, and and that's the challenge, and that's where our goal is to try to get direct current to in the hands of everybody because I I think my biggest takeaway from this, other than the fact that you're from Chicago, that is the everyone's an athlete getting in and out of a car, it doesn't matter, it's still athletic movements that everybody's doing, everybody's you know needing to do, and you know, direct current is such a a great avenue to continue to do what you want to do on a daily basis. So, Dr. Sam, phenomenal. I I like to say you guys are artists, really practitioners, artists, because you know, your ability to get people, as you mentioned, everybody's different, everyone's got individual you know, uh makeups and being able to give them that attention. You know, how can people get a hold of you and follow you? Um do you have an Instagram account?

Um that we post a lot of content there and a lot of a lot of free content as well, different exercises or things to utilize. We talk a lot about this technology, and uh I am I'm an open book. I just want to help really anybody and everybody, and if that means we can use this technology to you know accelerate that performance and recovery and return people to the field sooner uh in a stronger way, in a more durable way, like I'm all about it.

You know, one thing I want to add to what he said, um, you know, it's it's nice to hear that compliment, but one of the things I'll say is, you know, we can get this hands in the technology, but they have to be willing to dive in and do their own research and come up with their you know their own style and actually do the work. That team, his team and himself included, put the work in. I if you could look in our CRM, you'll see trainings. He's he was consistent, he wanted to learn the device, he made it his own, um, and now you can see where it's at. So, you know, uh, we need more doctors and we need more practitioners and people who are working with athletes and just in general, like him, um, to be as active as he is.
